Description
Looking for a Candy Corn Science Experiment to celebrate Halloween? Bring science to life (literally!) with the “Zombie Balloons” experiment—a spooky, hands-on activity that merges the magic of autumn with real-world science. Perfect for fall-themed lessons or Halloween fun, this interactive experiment engages students in learning about fermentation, yeast, and the power of observation.
The Backstory…
On a dark and chilly autumn day, you and your friends stumble upon something curious hidden away in a dusty storage room: mysterious balloons known as Zombie Balloons! According to legend, these balloons can be awakened from their eternal slumber if you give them the right ingredients. But be warned—awakening the undead requires just the right touch of sugar, a bit of warm water, and a sprinkle of yeast. Your mission is to find the perfect amount of candy corn to make your zombie balloons rise without growing out of control!
What will Students Do?
- Students work in groups of three. Each student in the group will make their own Zombie Balloon using yeast, candy corn, and water to inflate a balloon with fermentation.
- Each student tests a different number of candy corn pieces to find out if it has an effect on the size of the Zombie’s head (balloon).
What will Students Learn?
Students will discover the fascinating process of fermentation as they awaken the Zombie Balloons by “feeding” them different amounts of candy corn. Through this engaging experiment, they’ll explore how yeast—a tiny living organism—breaks down sugar to produce carbon dioxide gas, which inflates the balloons. It’s the same process that makes bread rise and root beer fizz.
