THE CHALLENGE (abbreviated version of the backstory):

It’s a warm summer evening. You and your friends have gathered in the park for an exciting game of capture the flag. To communicate secretly, your team has decided to use the call of an owl as a signal to alert each other of their presence in the dark.

The game begins… Suddenly, you hear the unmistakable “hoot, hoot” of an owl. Your heart races with excitement – it must be one of your teammates signaling their position.

Quietly, you move towards the sound. As you approach, the hooting continues, leading you deeper into the shadowy woods at the edge of the park. You call out softly, “Is that you, Sam?” But there’s no response.

Puzzled, you press on, determined to find your teammate. The hooting guides you to a small clearing. There, perched on a low branch, is a real barn owl. Realization dawns on you – the secret signal wasn’t your teammate after all. It was a real owl. As you turn to head back to the game, you realize you are disoriented. You gather your courage and try to remember your lessons from school about navigation and wildlife. The owl hoots again, as if offering a clue.

The owl’s extraordinary _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ allows it to navigate the dark.

The answer can be revealed by using a four-digit code. You will use the reading passage that follows, along with the Four Challenges, to determine the code and reveal the answer.

How Does this NO-PREP Escape Room Work?

⭐Students will be presented with an escape room challenge (see above)

⭐Students will then read a 4-page, high-interest reading passage with
beautiful color photos (printer-friendly version without photos is also
included)

⭐They will answer questions in 4 fun challenges. The answers are found in
the 4-page reading passage (no extra content necessary)

⭐As students complete each challenge, they will uncover a digit that will be
recorded on the answer sheet

⭐After all 4 challenges are complete, students will have a 4-digit code

⭐The code will be used to “unlock” the “Escape Message”

⭐There are three options for unlocking the “Escape Message”

HOW TO:

  1. To begin with, there are several flexible ways to reveal the final message, allowing you to easily adapt the Barn Owl Escape Room to your classroom setup.
  2. No Prep Option: First and foremost, for teachers looking for the simplest approach, the no-prep option is ideal. In this version, the teacher simply reveals the message with a paper sign once students present the correct code. This option requires no materials or setup—just a little bit of suspense and a lot of excitement!
  3. Lockbox Option: On the other hand, if you want to add an extra layer of mystery and engagement, the lockbox option is a fantastic choice. Here, the message is placed inside a lockbox with a 4-digit programmable lock (available on Amazon for about $4). The box can only be opened with the correct code, making the final reveal even more rewarding. Before the activity begins, teachers can place a “Congratulations” message or small prizes inside the box, creating an even more memorable experience for students.
  4. Digital Option: Finally, for classrooms that prefer a tech-savvy twist, the digital option provides a seamless alternative. Students use the code they discover to unlock a password-protected Google Slide (the link is provided in the teacher instructions). Once the correct code is entered, the slide automatically reveals the exciting “Congratulations” message. This digital format is especially useful for remote learning or when you want to save paper while still keeping students engaged.
  5. Altogether, these three options ensure that the Barn Owl Escape Room can easily fit into any classroom environment—whether in person, hybrid, or virtual—while maintaining the same sense of curiosity, collaboration, and celebration!
